Get “The Story of Texas”

The Story of Texas Museum in A is for AustinOne of the best ways to get to know a new city is to visit the local history museum.  And Austin is no exception.

But the Bob Bullock Texas State History Museum in downtown Austin is not your average history museum. From the IMAX to the interactive theatre complete with sights, sounds, and even a bit of rain (can this be Texas?  Nah, it never rains in Texas…at least not since I’ve been here!)  it’s genuinely fun!

Even the cafe was good…and cheap!  A major wow for a museum restaurant!

If you’re planning to be around for awhile, join the museum.  The free IMAX tickets alone make it worthwhile, and with three floors jam-packed with exhibits, you may need more than one visit to see it all.

Kerbey Lane

OK, maybe I’m a little biased.  I walked into Kerbey Lane for breakfast, and discovered a menu that was at least half vegetarian or vegan.  After years of breakfast menus centered around sausage and bacon, that was a wonderful discovery!  But I knew that even the meat eaters in my family would love this place.

I’ve been back a few times, once for lunch with my daughter, a few times for dinner as a family, and couple of times for a late night snack with my husband.  All hours of the day, this 24 hour restaurant was amazing.

Low cost, healthy, delicious meals, a friendly staff and warm welcoming surroundings made this an instant favourite.

So far I’ve been to the Kerbey Lane Northwest, and the one actually on a street named Kerbey Lane — both were equally yummy and friendly.  The Kerbey Lane location was charming in a restored Craftsman building, while the Northwest location offered a shady patio with live acoustic music even at breakfast.   Both were dog-friendly — another major plus!

Welcome to A is for Austin!

When you move to a new city, you need to find everything.  But that can be harder than you expect…at least it has been for us.

As newcomers to Austin, we decided started by searching through guidebooks and tourist brochures to try and find the things we wanted and needed, from a great breakfast place to a nearby dog park.  But guess what?  Very little of that information is in there.

So we’ve decided to make it easier for other newcomers (and Austin locals as well) by creating our own list of the very best of Austin from A to Z.

Join us as we explore our new city, find the treasures and hidden gems, and share our experiences with you.  And please share your finds with us…we would love to check them out!

And now for a brief introduction!

Lance is a programmer by trade, an outdoors man, sci-fi geek, music lover, dad and husband by choice.  He is also the one most likely to put an all-you-can-eat buffet out of business, so he spends a fair amount of time cycling and hitting the gym, too.

Lindsay is a writer, SEO and Social Marketing goddess (and modest besides!) who decided to use the move to Austin to leave the corporate world behind and start her own social marketing consulting business and spend more time writing. She’s also a  scrapbooker, outdoor lover, beach lover, music lover, dog rescuer, mom and wife.
